Marysville farmers market begins tonight

Fresh fruit and vegetables in a certified farmers market return to downtown Marysville tonight for the second season in a row.

The market is sponsored by the Marysville Business Improvement District.

"It's really fresh," said Jeanette Rice, a farmer and the certified farmers market manager.

"You can taste the difference, the freshness. And we offer free samples."

The farmers market includes cherries, strawberries, apricots, onions, broccoli, carrots, spinach, cauliflower and honey.

In addition, the weekly event scheduled Friday evenings through Sept. 10 on D Street between First and Third streets includes a street fair with prepared foods such as kettle corn, tacos and baked goods, a children's area, crafts and live music.

The street will be closed to traffic from 3 p.m.-8:30 p.m. every Friday during the season.

This year the Friday Night Market will be held during the Peach Festival in July after being suspended in 2009 due to the annual event.

"It (the farmers market) went pretty well last year," said Jeremiah Edwards, vice president of the Marysville BID, noting that it also helped nearby restaurants — shoppers went out to dinner after buying fruit and vegetables.

"We hope to do even better this year."

The market is still accepting applications from vendors and entertainers. Forms are available online at www.visit marysville.com/friday night_market.html.
