Letter: Proposition 8 results remain valid
The July 21 front-page headline declared a majority support for same-sex marriage.
This is not news; the same poll result occurred in May 2008. Nonetheless, in November 2008, voters passed Proposition 8 to prevent a redefinition of marriage.
During the campaign voters had the opportunity to consider two competing views of marriage. The losing side sees marriage as a private institution for the benefit of adults. The winning side sees marriage as a public institution that unites a man and a woman — and the children that may result — for the common good.
The first view is concerned with the private interests of a small group of adults. The second view is concerned with the interests of society and affirms the right of every child to a married mother and a father.
