Cosmetologist Ashley McKenzie styles Tiffany Nelson's hair at the Cut Loose Salon in Yuba City.

Ashley McKenzie

Name: Ashley McKenzie

Age: 20

Family: Husband, Russell McKenzie; daughter, Eden

City of residence: Sutter

Occupation: Cosmetologist at Cut Loose Salon

How did you decide on this occupation? I have been doing hair since I was in high school, so I figured I would probably like it. My father had wanted me to go to school, so when he passed away that was one thing I was going to do to honor him.

Hobbies, interests: I like to paint — a little bit of realism, a little bit of abstract — and do makeup.

Where do you get your news? Appeal-Democrat.

What brought you to the Yuba-Sutter area? My father was a lifelong resident here. I was raised here, moved to Washington state but came back.

Where would like to live after retiring? Beverly Hills. I love the culture down there. It's said there are a lot of people there but I didn't think so. It was really calm, relaxing and beautiful.

What is the closest you've been to a famous person? I went to High Voltage Tattoo in Los Angeles to see Kat Von D from "L.A. Ink." She wasn't there, but all her artists were.

If you were granted one wish, what would you wish for? That I would never lose another family member.

Whom do you most admire? My mom because she raised me and my two brothers as a single mother. She moved us and the clothes on our back to Washington.

Tell us about a life-changing experience: The day I had my daughter.

What was your first job? I did lawn services and cleaned houses for elderly people in the neighborhood, when I was about 10 years old in Washington.

What are your favorite places to go in the area? I like it in Sutter. It's nice and quiet — I can sit and see the Sutter Buttes from my back door.

What is your dream job? I would like to be an obstetrician

If you were in charge, what would you change about the community? I wish there were more sidewalks around. If you have to walk somewhere you have to walk on the side of the highway. That scares me.
