Letter: Yuba College board's meeting location criticized
I read with interest the article "Trustee 'royally burned' about bond" in the Jan. 11 Appeal-Democrat. Two of the trustees of the Yuba Community College District commented on the ridiculous $58 million pay back as horrifying.
But did anyone else notice that the board held its winter planning session at the Comfort Suites in Linda?
Yes, the board is angry about the ridiculous payback, but they have no problem renting a meeting room at the local hotel for a "planning session." Are they telling me that there are no classrooms available at their college? No meeting rooms? Though I can't be sure, I would bet the meeting was catered.
Now, if the average person was to be $58 million in debt, does anyone believe that the person would be renting a room at a hotel for a party? Of course not, that would be senseless!
So, why are our tax dollars being spent by the Yuba Community College District for a room, with catering, that they have plenty of at their campus? If it's an all-day meeting, then bring a sack lunch like the rest of us!
I know other government agencies in the Yuba-Sutter area cater breakfasts and lunches. This does not make it right. Why do government agencies continue to spend taxpayer money in this way? Our country is in debt in the trillions!
This unnecessary spending must stop.
