Live Oak drowning victims identified
The Live Oak father and son who drowned in a pond Saturday in Biggs have been identfied by the Butte County Coroner's Office as Jesus Rojas, 54, and Manuel Rojas-Hernandez, 2.
The pair were from Live Oak, according to the coroner's office.
About 4:45 p.m. Saturday, Rojas and his son were in an inflatable boat in a small pond at the end of Palm Avenue in Biggs when the boy fell overboard, according to witnesses and a sheriff's office press release.
The toddler was wearing a life vest, but the father was not, according to the sheriff's office. The man jumped in, grabbed hold of his son, but was unable to get back in the boat. Someone dialed 911.
When rescue personnel arrived, the man had been pulled to shore but the boy was still in the water, according to the sheriff's office. Medics started CPR on the man and the toddler. Rojas was pronounced dead on scene.
The son was taken to Gridley Memorial Hospital, where his death was pronounced shortly thereafter.
