Motive unknown in Linda drive-by shooting

Teng Yang, 20, was pronounced dead at the scene and three other Linda residents at a family gathering were wounded in a drive-by shooting Sunday night on Poplar Avenue, the Yuba County Sheriff's Department said.

Shots fired at about 10 p.m. killed Yang and wounded a 24-year-old man, a 27-year-old man and a 19-year-old woman at the home in the 5800 block of Poplar near Almond Avenue. Their conditions are not thought to be life-threatening and law enforcement is withholding their names pending additional investigation.

A motive for the shooting is under investigation, and gang involvement has not been ruled out, the Sheriff's Department said. The only description of the vehicle from which the shots were fired is a possibly dark-colored car.

Authorities did not say whether the victims were inside or outside the house when they were shot.

Undersheriff Jerry Read said he does not know how long Yang had lived at the home along Poplar.

Cedar Lane Elementary School, which is near the site of the shootings, limited outdoor activity today.

A resident who lives along Cedar Lane said Monday that the area is not a bad neighborhood.

"I've been here four years," said the man, who declined to give his name over concerns for his safety. "It can't be that bad."

David Williamson, a construction worker spoke about owning property along Poplar and said the street hasn't proved dangerous. Asked if the neighborhood is safe, he said, "It is to me."

But two women walking along Poplar on Monday spoke about earlier crimes committed in the area.

"I'm really worried," one of the woman said.

The women declined to give their names, also because of safety concerns.
