Letter: ‘One size fits all' is an outdated attitude
Comments 0 | Recommend 0Recently, there was a debate concerning the type of schedule that would be implemented at both of the high schools in Yuba City. One schedule was the traditional schedule; the other was the block schedule.
This debate merely reflects one of the inherent problems that has existed in public school systems for decades, and that is the notion that "one size fits all."
This philosophy has characterized public education forever. The "one size fits all" may have been appropriate when America did not reflect the great diversity that it does today. Certainly, there has been the recent addition of charter schools in most communities. However, the number of these schools are relatively small.
Choice in public education is long overdue. Public schools need to diversify to meet the students' interests and needs and parental preferences. Any organization that attempts to continue with its basic design and structure is not likely to be an organization that would survive the changing climate of America.
I am pursuing a career as a mathematics high school teacher. Clearly, there is a critical need for math instructors. When I graduate I want to find the high school that is innovative and reflects practices that are supported by educational research.
I am hoping that my only choice will not be a private school since I believe that the foundation of a democracy is the quality and diversity of its public schools.
