Yuba City woman thrown, critically injured in rollover
A Yuba City woman was in critical condition Saturday in a Roseville hospital after she was ejected from her vehicle around midnight on Walton Avenue.
Maryellyn Teresa Palmeri, 49, was taken by air ambulance to Sutter Roseville Medical Center, the California Highway Patrol reported.
A nursing supervisor confirmed her condition on Saturday afternoon.
Palmeri was driving south in the 3100 block of Walton Avenue, south of Yuba City, at an undetermined speed when her gray 2009 Nissan Altima rolled several times. Palmeri was thrown from the vehicle, CHP Sgt. Michael McCarthy said.
Palmeri and the vehicle landed on the east side of the road, just outside a walnut orchard. She was traveling with a Labrador dog that was not seriously hurt, McCarthy said.
Neighborhood resident Michelle Applegarth said she heard two to three crashing sounds from inside her home.
"It sounded like a car rolling over," Applegarth said. "It was kind of faint at first, but got louder."
She said she quickly called 911.
"I came outside and there was dust everywhere. You couldn't see anything," Applegarth said. "I had to go back and get a flashlight."
Bob and Suzanne Stapley were getting ready for bed when they heard the crash.
"I just heard this thump, thump, thump," Suzanne Stapley said.
Residents said that stretch of Walton Avenue, just north of Edwards Lane, is plagued daily with speeding vehicles.
"I don't let my kids play outside in the front yard," Applegarth said.
Emergency responders remained on scene for more than an hour cleaning debris and investigating the crash site.
The CHP said it was still too early to know what caused the crash.
