Historic photos sought for AcaDeca calendar

Historical photos of local eateries and landmarks are sought to use in the 2010 calendar created by the Marysville High School Academic Decathlon Team.

Photos sought include Metcalf's Eat & Run, The Huddle, Vienna Inn, Silver Dollar Saloon, Montgomery Ward, Woolworth's, the old Coca-Cola building, Suey Sing Society building and the Big/Little Game festivities.

The public can ask to have photos picked up to be scanned and returned.

Help needed for Elk's Thanksgiving dinner

Volunteers and donations are needed for the Marysville Elk's Lodge annual Thanksgiving Dinner.

Dinner is slated from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, Thanksgiving Day, at 920 D St., Marysville.

The dinner is open to the public.

For more information, call the lodge at 743-5134 after 1:30 p.m. weekdays or 674-5806. Volunteers can also just show up the day of the event.

Yuba City

Origami art class today at Yuba City library branch

Ken Kagehiro is teaching participants how to create origami art at today's Sutter County Library Literacy Program in Yuba City.

The program is from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Sutter County Library, 750 Forbes Ave.

Moose Lodge to host dance event in Gridley

The Gridley Moose Lodge is hosting a traditional dance club and country tradition band today in Gridley.

Slated from 8 to 11:30 p.m. at 1533 Highway 99, the event is open to the public.

Boy Scout received Eagle rank honors Friday

Logan Norene, a member of Boy Scouts Troop 32, received the rank of Eagle Scout in a Boy Scout court of honor Friday evening at the Clark Avenue Chapel of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Yuba City.

The son of Debora and William Tooke and Lamont Norene, all of Yuba City, he is a member of the church's Feather River Ward.

Norene's work project benefited the Children's Hope Foster Family Agency by organizing landscape clean-up and construction on property that houses teens who have exited the foster care system at 18 years of age and have no place to go.

In addition, Norene also earned the Duty to God Award and first responder certification.

Marysville

Fitness class for Yuba preschoolers to begin

A new session of physical education class for preschoolers in Yuba County starts next week, coordinated by the Yuba County Recreation office.

The six-week session is from Monday to Jan. 1, with the topic "mouth." Learning goals including preventing colds and the spread of germs, tooth care and poison/drugs.

The classes are at 1:30 p.m. for ages 2 and 3 years and 2 p.m. for ages 3 to 5 years Tuesdays at Pro Fitness, 424 D St., Marysville.

The cost is $20 per session.

Food donations needed for rescue mission meal

Donations of foods including turkey, ham, vegetables and pies are needed for a traditional Thanksgiving dinner for those in need planned by the Twin Cities Rescue Mission in Marysville.

The dinner, with fellowship and music, will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, preceded by a gospel message, in the mission chapel, 940 14th St.

Food donations are needed for about 125 men, women and children.

Donations can be brought to the mission or, for pick up, call 743-8777.

Two sites seek holiday donations for needy

Unwrapped gift donations and food for the needy are being accepted at two sites in time for the holidays.

Unwrapped toys valued at $10 for the Salvation Army's "Angel Kids" program can be dropped off at Louie Medina's Hair Productions, 764 Plumas St., Yuba City.

The Alliance for Hispanic Advancement is accepting food to help needy families during Thanksgiving and Christmas at La Plazita, 787 Plumas St., Yuba City. For more information, contact Debbie Porcayo at 713-2456.

Thanksgiving dinner set for Saturday

A Thanksgiving dinner, organized by A Hand Up Ministry to the Homeless, is set from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 28 at the River Bottoms Church on Lynn Way off of Market Street, Yuba City.

The event includes a turkey dinner, live music, a children's activities area and dessert.

Pearl Harbor memorial ceremony set Dec. 7

Observance of the National Pearl Harbor Remembrance 68th Anniversary is planned Dec. 7 at the Butte County Fairgrounds in Gridley.

The ceremony, open to the public, is at 9:55 a.m. at the memorial flag pole, with the gates open from 8 a.m. to noon. The fairgrounds are at 199 E. Hazel St.

The observance is under the direction of the Feather River Chapter No. 25 of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association.

Yuba City

Senior center plans trip to 'Xanadu'

Limited space is available to see a production of Broadway Sacramento "Xanadu" through the Yuba City Senior Center.

The trip is from 12:30 to 5:30 p.m. Jan. 7. The fee is $70 per person and includes transportation and the show.

Hometown Christmas event set for Nov. 28

Hot chocolate and hot spiced cider will be part of the Hometown Christmas planned from noon to 8 p.m. Nov. 28 at Gold Trader Flat, a replica of a town in the 1800s, in Forbestown.

The event includes live music, a Nativity scene, visits with Father Christmas and characters from the past along with a variety of Christmas wares.

Y-S women invited to holiday brunch

Women residing in Sutter and Yuba counties are invited to the annual Women's Coalition Holiday Brunch at the Peach Tree Golf and Country Club in Linda.

The brunch, hosted by the Yuba-Sutter Women's Coalition, begins at 9:30 a.m. Dec. 12. The country club is at 2043 Simpson-Dantoni Road.

Brunch will follow live holiday music provided by the Elementary Children's Chorus of Yuba City, featuring third-grade students from two schools, under the direction of Jeanne McClard.

Museum hosts holiday 'Trees' fundraiser

"Trees and Traditions," a benefit for the Community Memorial Museum of Sutter County, will be held Dec. 5 at 1333 Butte House Road, Yuba City.

The party's centerpiece, a 16-foot Christmas tree, is decorated with ornaments handcrafted by museum volunteers.

The event, from 5 to 8 p.m., includes hors d'oeuvres, sparkling champagne and wine, a silent auction and music by the MARKS Ensemble.

In addition, small decorated trees and gifts donated by local businesses and individuals will be awarded in a drawing.

Tickets are $40 per person or $75 per couple. All proceeds benefit museum operating costs for 2010.

Tickets on sale for VFW holiday dinner

Advance tickets are available for the Judge W. E. Tucker Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2563 Christmas Dinner slated Dec. 12 in Yuba City.

Dinner is at 6 p.m., with the bar opening at 5 p.m., at the Veterans Hall, 1425 Veterans Memorial Drive. Santa will appear at 7 p.m.

Those attending are asked to bring gifts, with name tags, for their children.

Tickets are $10 per adult or $15 per couple in advance or $20 at the door. Admission is free for children under 12 years.

In addition, winners will be announced in the Voice of Democracy and Patriots Pen programs.

Three-day Craft Faire set to begin Dec. 2

The Christmas Craft Faire, sponsored by the Sutter/Yuba Mental Health Services Work Activity Center, is set at the services building, 1965 Live Oak Blvd., Yuba City.

Featuring crafts by local program participants, the fair is from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 2 through 4.

All proceeds will benefit Marysville Adult Education and the Sutter/Yuba Mental Health's Job Prep Program and the Work Activity Center.

Wheatland

Rosser receives national FFA Degree

Katharine Rosser of Wheatland, a member of Wheatland FFA, received the American FFA Degree Oct. 24 in Indianapolis.

The degree was awarded at the 82nd National Future Farmers of America Convention.

Rosser is the second person from Wheatland Union High School to receive the degree in the past 75 years.

The degree is given in recognition of demonstrated leadership and achievements in agricultural business, production, processing or service programs.

Marysville

Library celebrates local history archives

The Yuba County Library is hosting a celebration of local history archives in Marysville with a party from 3 to 5 p.m. Dec. 19.

The event will be in the library's California Room. The library is at 303 Second St.

Sons in Retirement seek new members

New members are invited to join Sons in Retirement, a nonprofit group for men who are retired or semi-retired.

The branches meet once a month for a fellowship hour, lunch and a guest speaker. Activities also include travel and an annual dinner/dance.

Local branches include locations in Yuba City, meeting at 11:45 a.m. on the first Monday of each month, excepting holidays, in the Plaza Room in Hillcrest Plaza, 210 Julie Drive; and in Marysville, meeting at 11:45 a.m. the third Tuesday of each month at the Elks Lodge, 920 D St.
