Live Oak locks up GVML title
Raul Diaz scored a goal in overtime and the Live Oak High boys soccer team clinched the Greater Mountain Valley League championship with a 4-3 victory over Willows on Thursday.
“It was a great game. Willows just didn't give up,” said coach Mike Owen.
Dirceo Ramirez and Gustavo Lopez had a goal and an assist each for the Lions (7-4-2, 6-1), and Juan Tinoco picked up two assists in the game.
Colusa 2, Rio Vista 0
Ricardo Amado and Miguel Torres each scored goals as Colusa (4-7-3, 3-2-1) picked up a Greater Mountain Valley League win.
Goalie Pedro Chavez recorded nine saves in the shutout. Christian Seja, Jorge Buenrostro and Arturo Farias all played tight defense for the Redskins.
Gridley 10, Winters 3
Jorge Martinez scored four goals and had two assists in the Bulldogs' thrashing of the host Warriors in a Butte View League game.
Alex Alejo added two goals. Aurello Guzman, Gabe Martinez, Roberto Tinoco and Leo Zarate added a goal each. Tinoco had three assists, Zarate finished with two and Alejo, Guzman and Martinez collected one each.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Faith Christian 56, Sac. Lutheran 20
Hayden Keeley led the way for the Lions (10-7, 4-5), dropping in 20 points, including two 3 pointers.
Logan Denney played large in the post, picking up five steals and four assists. Michael Garrett added 10 points for Faith Christian.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Faith Christian 58, Sac. Lutheran 30
Tierzah Brown scored 17 points and Cheni Holden added 13 as Faith Christian (11-7, 3-4) dominated Sacramento Lutheran in a Central Valley Christian League win.
Katie DeMeritt added 13 points, including one 3-pointer. Kayla Trimble provided much of the defensive spark, collecting six steals.
Williams 56, Chester 49
Julia Virgen scored a game-high 33 points and collected 14 rebounds, leading the Yellowjackets to a Mid-Valley League victory.
WRESTLING
Golden Sierra 42, Marysville 27
James Chandless pinned his opponent in the first round, improving to 24-2 in the 171-pound weight class, but the Indians couldn't overcome the visiting Grizzlies.
Eric Hull (135) won a 13-8 decision; Houston Bolek (145) won 18-13; Aaron Rochin (152) earned a 4-2 win; and Jorge Parra (189) won by pin for Marysville.
JV BOYS BASKETBALL
Yuba City 65, River Valley 53
Kevin Sanchez and Alex Barrow scored 11 points to lead the Honkers to a Metro Conference victory.
Yuba City (13-8, 5-3) jumped out to a quick 21 point lead, but strong play by the Falcons cut the deficit to six.
Josh Duck added 10 points for River Valley.
JV GIRLS BASKETBALL
Sutter 44, Gridley 41
Kari Post turned in a complete night, scoring nine points, picking up seven rebounds, collecting three blocks and swiping five steals to lead the Huskies (4-1) to a Butte View League victory.
Sam Sizemore scored 12 points and picked up six rebounds for Sutter.
No information was available for Gridley.
FROSH GIRLS BASKETBALL
Yuba City 66, River Valley 37
Kevin Noall and Tyler Fry led the way for Yuba City, scoring 16 and 15 points, respectively. The Honkers improved to 14-8 and 5-3 in league.
