LOCAL ROUNDUP: Yuba men open BVC slate with blowout
YC boys, Marysville girls fall on road
The Yuba College men's basketball team began its quest for a seventh straight Bay Valley Conference title in Fairfield on Wednesday night, and like the previous six years, the 49ers opened their BVC campaign with a bang.
Chris Smith poured in a game-high 27 points and point guard Akachi Okugo had a big game with 16 points, eight assists and seven rebounds to lead the 49ers to a 91-64 thrashing of Solano.
Yev Dyachenko added 12 points and sophomore Achoki Moikobu finished with nine points, eight assists and five steals in the win. Smith also pulled down four rebounds and dished out four assists for Yuba, which bolted out to a 39-19 lead at the half and never looked back.
The 49ers host league favorite Contra Costa in their conference home opener on Friday. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Solano 79, Yuba 56
Chelsea Geoia posted team highs with 14 points and six rebounds, but the Lady Niners committed 33 turnovers to open their BVC slate with a loss.
Katie Mobley, Taylor Rasmussen and Chloe Pereiro added eight points each for Yuba, which slipped to 1-8 overall and 0-1 in the BVC with the setback.
Natalya Stepanchuk had 17 points, 12 rebounds and five steals, and Rasmussen finished with 13 points in a 70-47 nonconference loss to Lassen on Saturday night.

BOYS BASKETBALL
Rocklin 73, Yuba City 62
In Rocklin — Freshman Kyle Turnquest scored a team-high 13 points and Gurpreet Singh canned three 3-pointers in the first period while finishing with nine points, but the Honkers came up short in a nonleague loss to the Thunder on the road.
The loss snapped a five-game winning streak for Yuba City, which captured the Central Valley Tournament title in Ceres over the weekend.
"We just had a very bad second quarter," Yuba City coach Brian Davis said. "They outscored us 21-7 in the second and that killed us."
Tanner McAlister and Travis Blas added eight points each for the Honkers (8-7), who will travel to Grass Valley to take on Nevada Union today at 7 p.m.
Yuba City's junior varsity team lost 79-46. Angel Hernandez scored 23 points, Parker Lowe added five points and Emari Love chipped in with four in the setback for Yuba City (7-8).
Rocklin also took the freshman matchup 57-52. Ryan Besso scored 13 points and Daniel Claydon added 11 for the Honkers (8-8).
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Rio Linda 50, Marysville 48
In Rio Linda — The Indians led for almost the entire game before dropping a heartbreaker to the Knights in the fourth quarter.
Bayshta Aguila scored 16 points and Holly Tarr added 14 for the Indians (8-8), who will host Sutter in their final nonleague tune-up on Friday at 6:30 p.m.
Marysville also dropped the JV game 35-21. Morgan Lake scored eight points to lead the way for the Indians.
