Yuba College men get big win over Contra Costa

The Yuba College men's basketball team's chances of claiming a seventh straight Bay Valley Conference championship got a little better on Wednesday night.

The 49ers bested Contra Costa College 90-83 in San Pablo to stay undefeated in BVC play at 10-0.

Yuba (17-6 overall) let a 14-point lead slip away in the second half, but eventually pulled away at the end of regulation.

"Contra Costa played very inspired ... they were awesome in the second half," said Yuba College coach Doug Cornelius. "(Contra Costa) played as well as they could play ... it was unbelievable."

The Niners received a huge lift from their bench on Wednesday as Darrell Polee, Vic West Jr. and Jaysen Williams combined to score 44 points off the bench.

West poured in 18 points, while Williams had a double-double with 14 points, 12 rebounds and six blocks. Polee tacked on 12 points.

The victory puts Yuba three games ahead of second-place Contra Costa in the standings with seven BVC games left.

Chris Smith led Yuba with 18 points and eight assists.

Akachi Okugu added 14 points and Achoki Moikobu dropped in 13 points.

The 49ers are off until Feb. 6 when they host College of Alameda.
