Poll: Proposition to repel green energy bill losing

Early polling by the respected Field Poll shows an uphill fight for supporters of Proposition 23, the November ballot measure to suspend AB 32, the state law meant to curb global warming.

According to poll results released today, 48 percent of voters oppose the measure, compared to 36 percent in favor. Conventional wisdom for statewide propositions holds that any measure polling at under 50 percent support before an election has a difficult time reversing the trend.

Supporters of Proposition 23, a group including Assemblyman Dan Logue, R-Linda, assailed the poll results, saying poll takers didn't ask about AB 32's effects on the economy or how concerned respondents were with losing jobs as a result.

The anti-23 side got a boost earlier this week, when Pacific Gas & Electric Co. — which has invested heavily in green energy sources thought likely to benefit from AB 32's implementation in coming years — came out in opposition to Proposition 23.
