Helping others survive cancer and stay well has inspired hundreds of people in Glenn County to join relay teams, volunteer on committees, raise money or help organize one of the largest fundraising events in the entire country.

Relay For Life is the American Cancer Society's signature event, held in more than 5,000 communities — including Willows — to honor cancer survivors, educate participants about healthy lifestyles and raise funds for cancer research.

Each year people come to celebrate the lives of those who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost to cancer, and empower individuals and communities to fight back against a disease that takes so much, said Kristina Hutson, 2013 Glenn County Relay for Life event coordinator.

"I've known so many people who have had cancer," Hutson said. "Too many."

The 24-hour Relay for Life will be held June 1-2 at the Willows High School track and field.

Organizers kicked off the fundraising season on Thursday with a rally at Round Table Pizza.

The group hopes to raise more than $70,000 this year to support American Cancer Society's programs of cancer research, education, advocacy and patient service.

"We're hope to have at least 22 teams this year," Hutson said. "We have 17 teams so far and two new teams from Orland. That is great because this is a Glenn County event, not just Willows."

Relay for Life is a 24-hour noncompetitive relay and walk-a-thon, which provides participants an opportunity to raise money for the American Cancer Society while having fun, Hutson said.

Typically, teams are formed to run or walk a certain time period, with someone from the group filling out each segment of the 24-hour period.

Food and vendor booths to help raise money for Relay for Life will be on site, as well as raffles, prizes and games.

A Kid's Corner will be set up.

Entertainment at the relay will include DJ Ryan Devereaux both days of the event, and Northern Heat will perform a free concert from 1-4 p.m. on June 1.

The annual Relay for Life will have two new fundraising events this year, including a Bark for Life Canine Relay on April 20, and 5K-10K run on April 27, Hutson said.

In addition, teams participating in the event will have a number of fundraising activities in Willows and Orland, including car washes, yard sales, raffles and special events.
