Letter: Sub teacher's letter offends RV student

November 21, 2008 - 5:51 PM

I am a sophomore at River Valley High School, and I am writing in regards to the Nov. 7 letter written by substitute teacher Cheryl Miller ("River Valley should take page from YCHS"). Although I agree that both schools should remain on their current schedules, I was extremely offended by the way she portrayed River Valley.

In no way is RV's atmosphere "gang-like," and I think Cheryl Miller may have over-generalized based on her experience with one class. In my two years attending RV, I have never experienced a class like the one she described, nor have I ever had a teacher who allowed iPods in class. Cheryl Miller also claims that the block schedule only works in theory, but I, as well as the vast majority of the students, thrive on the block schedule. I have several friends who were 2008 RVHS graduates who currently attend UC Davis, one of whom was accepted by UC Berkeley. Therefore, I know that RVHS students are well educated and properly prepared for life after high school.

I understand YCHS wanting to remain on its traditional schedule, but it's wrong to vilify RV to prove a point.
