Falcons notch first varsity volleyball victory

River Valley's volleyball team got its first win, 3-0, at home on Wednesday night against Natomas in its Tri-County Conference opener.


After an 0-6 start to the year, the Falcons got game wins of 25-9, 25-10 and 25-9.


“We are a very young team with a lot of freshman and sophomores,” said head coach Tina Lyons. “Hopefully this will give us confidence and get us rolling.”


Mary McReynolds had 15 of River Valley's 31 aces and Rachel Shintaku added three digs.


GIRLS GOLF


Yuba City 286, Natomas 0


Yuba City moved to 2-2 overall and 2-1 in Tri-County Conference play as Natomas didn't have enough players and had to forfeit.


The Honkers shot a combined 286, led by Hayley Holloway's 41, and followed by Rachel Martin (52), Jessica Oakman (62), Samantha Bendorf (65) and Lizzie Jenkins (66).


FIELD HOCKEY


Chico 1, Yuba City 0


Excellent defense kept Yuba City in the game, but Chico scored in the last few minutes of the game to defeat the Honkers (0-2) in an Eastern Athletic League game.


Lassen 8, River Valley 0


River Valley (0-2 overall, 0-2 Eastern Athletic League) recorded a couple of firsts despite a shutout loss.


Kristen Henderson recorded the Falcons' first-ever shot on goal, as she made several long runs up the sidelines. River Valley also posted its first-ever short corner play.


Falcons goalie Lauren Kent was credited with 14 saves.


JV FIELD HOCKEY


Chico 1, Yuba City 0


The game was dominated by defense and was tied at the end of regulation, but Chico won the shoot-out 1-0 to send Yuba City (0-2) to a narrow defeat in an Eastern Athletic League contest.


Lassen 8, River Valley 0


The Falcons fell to 0-2 on the season with the Eastern Athletic League loss at Lassen.


Coaches praised the play of Becca Ulm on defense and Dallas Ness at midfield.


JV VOLLEYBALL


River Valley 2, Natomas 0


River Valley won its first league match, 25-9, 25-9, and opened Tri-County Conference play with the win.


April Goodman had three kills and Jamie Sayre added five aces.


Marysville 2, Lindhurst 0


Marysville won its Golden Empire League opener with scores of 25-8 and 25-8.


Chelsea Lance had 10 digs and Fiona Newman added five kills and six aces in the win.


FROSH VOLLEYBALL


Marysville 2, Lindhurst 1


DaShawna White and Sarah Novale led Marysville (2-4) to a win, 25-9, 21-25, 15-10 in a Golden Empire League-opening match for both teams.
