Magic Theater steals from rich with take on 'Robin Hood'
Comments 0 | Recommend 0The story of "Robin Hood," the thief who stole from the rich and gave to the poor, has been told many different ways.
The Magic Theater in Yuba City will present its own take on the classic story beginning this Saturday and running to May 17.
"I've always liked the story of good and evil and (Robin Hood) overcoming it," said John Trent, the play's writer and director. "It's always been one of my favorite stories."
"Robin Hood" is named for its primary character, a figure from English folklore who lived during medieval times. Robin Hood (played by both Jeremy Trent and Kevin Heller) steals from the rich with the aid of Little John (Davey Eaves), one of his "Merry Men."
This puts them at odds with the Sheriff of Nottingham (Thomas Hanns Jr.) and Prince John (Chris Collier), who was based on the historic John of England.
The only difference between the Magic Theater's version of "Robin Hood" and others is that Robin Hood uses his wits to escape from danger instead of using bows and arrows, Trent said.
"One of the things I've tried to bring across in the story is that no matter how hard (life) can be, you have to keep trying," Trent said. "No matter what obstacles you face, you have to try to overcome them."
Rounding out the cast of "Robin Hood" is Kathryn Martinez as Robin's love interest, Maid Marian; Avery Brooks as Friar Tuck; Johnathan Simeroth as Billy; Courtney Williams as Sammy; Shurea Cole and Stephanie Balmer as the Lady in Waiting; and Kevin Trent as the jester.
"There's a lot in here for the whole family," Trent said. "There's dancing and music — adults will recognize the songs (in the play) and appreciate them."
"Robin Hood" will also have a special performance at 7 p.m. April 24, with proceeds benefiting Family Soup as part of Autism Awareness month. The 3 p.m. May 3 performance will also have a sign language interpreter for the hearing impaired.
