YUBA CITY

Missionary to speak on service

Michael Sawyer is the featured speaker at the 9 a.m. Sunday service at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Hillcrest congregation in Yuba City.

He will talk about his recently completed two-year mission serving at the Santo Domingo West Mission in the Dominican Republic.

Sawyer is the son of John and Candy Sawyer of Yuba City. A 2009 graduate of River Valley High School, he plans to attend Brigham Young University Idaho in 2013.

COLUSA COUNTY

Christmas concerts on tap

Several free Christmas concerts are scheduled in Colusa County, presented by the Community Choir,

Directed by Jody Bowker, the choir is performing at 7 p.m. in four concerts:

Thursday — Parkside United Methodist Church, 936 G St., Williams.

Friday — Grimes Community Church on Main Street, Grimes.

Dec. 16 — Arbuckle United Methodist Church, Ninth and Pendelton streets, Arbuckle.

Dec. 17 — Trinity United Methodist Church, 511 Oak St., Colusa.

The choir includes residents of the area and neighboring counties.

Our Lady of Guadalupe celebrations scheduled

Celebrations are under way for the day of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the patron saint of Mexico, at St. Isidore Catholic Church in Yuba City.

The procession on Sunday starts at 11:30 a.m. at Richland Housing on Garden Highway and ends at the church, at 222 Clark Ave.

The day's events include a Mass at 1 p.m. and food served in the parish hall at 3 p.m.

Novenas for Our Lady of Guadalupe continue at 6:30 p.m. each day through Wednesday.

On Wednesday, the day of the Virgin of Guadalupe, activities at the church start with mañanitas at 5 a.m., followed by a Mass at 6 a.m. and breakfast at 7 a.m.

The celebrations are hosted by the Guadalupana Association of St. Isidore.

'Big Give Away' set today

"The Big Give Away," providing clothes, toys and food to families in need, is set from noon-4 p.m. today at 4902 Powerline Road, Olivehurst.

The event is hosted by the Calvary Christian Center, Plumas Lake/Olivehurst.
