Briefs: 2 cited in Marysville for giving alcohol to minors

Two people were cited Thursday for buying alcohol for minors during Marysville Police Department sting operation.

Charles Everett Travis, 63, of Browns Valley, was cited for furnishing an alcoholic beverage to a minor, then arrested for drunken driving with an open container, police said in a statement.

Bernice Morris, 32, of Marysville, was cited and released in the 100 block of East 12th Street for furnishing alcohol to a minor.

The citations were part of the department's ongoing Shoulder Tap and Minor Decoy stings, which target those who purchase alcohol for minors and those who sell directly to them.

Providing alcohol to anyone under 21 years old is a misdemeanor offense punishable with steep fines and possible jail time and community service, police said.

Decoys do not try to trick adults, lie about their age or use fake identification.

Help sought to save old school

People interested in helping preserve West Butte School in the Sutter Buttes are invited to a meeting hosted by the Middle Mountain Foundation.

The first school on the site was built in 1860, with the existing building dating to 1907.

The school served children until 1944.

The meeting is at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Community Memorial Museum of Sutter County, 1333 Butte House Road, Yuba City.

Dinner fundraiser aids elementary

A spaghetti dinner fundraiser will be held from 6 p.m.-8 p.m. Thursday at Meridian Elementary School, 15898 Central St., Meridian.

Tickets for the dinner are $5 eand are available at the door.

A raffle with prizes and an auction are also part of the event that is sponsored by Recology Yuba-Sutter.

All proceeds will benefit the Parents' Club and the Shady Creek Outdoor School fund.
