Letter: Sex offender status upsets mom

Comments 0 | Recommend 0

Why are sex offenders allowed around kids?

I was very upset at what I learned. I picked my kid up from school and saw there was a sex offender on the campus. I always thought that the law meant that they had to stay away from schools and was shocked when I contacted the Department of Justice from the Megan's Law Web site to report it. They told me it was OK as long as the school gave him written permission, but to make sure that I contact the school and find out what their rule was about it. I then contacted the principal of my kid's school; he told me that they had contacted law enforcement and there was nothing the school could do. As long as he doesn't linger around the school, he can pick up a child there.
