LOCAL ROUNDUP: Yuba men clinch share of BVC title

49ers baseball wins in extras

Akachi Okugo scored 17 points and dished out 10 assists, and the Yuba College men's basketball team clinched at least a share of the Bay Valley Conference title with a 92-60 rout of Los Medanos on Friday night in Pittsburg.

Both Chris Smith and Jeremy Bubier, were both a rebound short of posting a double-double. Smith scored 16 points and Bubier scored 10 for Yuba (19-7, 13-1).

Yev Dyachenko scored 14 points and Darrell Polee Jr. chipped in 11.

The 49ers will play at College of Marin on Wednesday before hosting Merritt this Friday in the team's regular-season finale.

Los Medanos 61, Lady 49ers 52

In Pittsburg — Chloe Pereiro dropped 21 points, but Yuba came up short in a BVC game.

Natalie Stepanchuk had 14 points at the half, but suffered an ankle injury at the beginning of the second half.

"I think that makes a difference when you lose a player who was effective as her," Yuba coach Steve Sain said.

Kylie Nore had a stellar night running the floor. She dished out eight assists and grabbed seven steals.

YUBA BASEBALL

49ers 5, Feather River 1, 11 innings

In Marysville — The 49ers rattled off four runs in the 11th inning to top the Golden Eagles in a non-league game at Appeal-Democrat Park.

Feather River put up a run in the second inning, before Yuba (4-1) answered in the sixth when Christian Divelbiss knocked in Brandon Lockwood on a double.

Things remained tied until the 11th thanks to come quality outings by Tim Catalano, who allowed five hits and two walks over eight innings, and Michael Frantz, who allowed just one hit over three innings.

In the 11th, Frantz and Dallas Cummings helped add to the self-inflicted damage done by Feather River by driving in a pair of runs each. Feather River hit three batters and committed two errors in the final inning.

PREP BOYS BASKETBALL

Pierce 51, East Nicolaus 34

In Arbuckle — Oscar Dorantes scored 20 points, Andy Corona added 16 and the Bears blew by the Spartans in their Sacramento Valley League regular-season finale.

Drew Orr led East Nicolaus (9-14, 5-7) with 13 points. With the win, Pierce improved to 17-6 and 10-2.

Maxwell 56, Biggs 42

In Maxwell — The Panthers closed out their Mid-Valley League championship with a victory over the Wolverines on Senior Night.

George Barajas led Maxwell (16-6, 9-1) with 17 points, seven rebounds and four steals, while Zach Troughton dropped in a double-double with 12 points and 11 boards.

Eddie Rangel scored seven points to go with 11 rebounds and five assists. Isaias Martinez tacked on eight points for the Panthers.

Colusa 49, Portola 42

In Portola — The RedHawks closed out MVL play with a win over the Tigers.

Yasmin Moreno had a big night with 20 points, four steals and three rebounds. Teale Stacey totaled 14 points, seven blocks, five rebounds, five steals and three assists for the RedHawks (14-11, 6-4).

Emily Mobley contributed nine points, 12 rebounds and three blocks, while Paige Townzen added five points, nine rebounds and four assists.

Colusa's JV team (19-4, 10-0) defeated Portola 40-24 behind Andrea Thomas' 10 points. Mollie Townzen added nine points and Sally Loeza tacked on seven for the MVL-champion RedHawks.
