Simlick relationship ended badly before killings

Kendall Martin had dated Joseph Hayden Simlick, but broke off their relationship, according to testimony at a preliminary hearing earlier this year.

Four days prior to the killings and fire, Simlick slapped Kendall Martin during an argument, authorities said.

She told deputies that her parents were angry at Simlick during the hours leading up to the fire.

Jack Martin left numerous phone messages for Simlick, demanding Simlick leave his daughter alone.

Six 911 calls were made during the attack, the first coming at 10:13 p.m. Dispatchers recorded much of the brutal assault over the phone, but were unable to pinpoint the location of the calls until later when fire engulfed the house.

Firefighters discovered Jack Martin's body on the dining room floor. Susan Martin was found inside the garage.

Investigators said Simlick set four fires in the house and garage before running away.
