Nevada Union blanks River Valley baseball
The East Nicolaus High softball team opened its 2013 campaign with a 14-2 blow-out victory over Rio Vista at home on Thursday.
Amanda Taylor struck out five batters and issued no walks in five innings of work for the Spartans.
Brook Essary finished 2 for 2 with a double at the plate, while Taylor went 2 for 4 with a double.
Brianna Gaytan was strong behind the dish, gunning down two runners in the five-inning game, which was shortened due to the 10-run rule.
BASEBALL
Wheatland 10, Live Oak 0, 5 innings
In Wheatland — Devon Day went 2 for 3 with a double and two RBIs, Seth Millington doubled and drove home a pair of runs and the Pirates cruised to a nonleague win over the Lions.
Josh Crawley and Michael Woods combined on a one-hit shutout for Wheatland, which moved to 1-1 on the year with the victory.

In Grass Valley — The Falcons struck out only twice, but they mustered just one hit in a nonleague setback to the Miners.

In Princeton — Oscar Sanchez was 2 for 4 with a home run and four RBIs, and Dalton Sachs went 2 for 4 as well to lead the Bears past the Eagles in a nonleague contest.
Jake Vorhees struck out six over the first three innings and Hayden Kalfsbeek fanned six over the final four frames to combine for the win. Neither allowed an earned run.
Garrett Brainard added a double for Pierce (2-0).
GIRLS SOCCER
River Valley 2, Bear River 0
In Grass Valley — Jackie Koch and Blanca Silva scored a goal each and the Falcons improved to 4-3 on the year with a nonleague victory over the Bruins.
Karinna Recendez and Morgan McIntyre both notched an assist and Carla Ruiz recorded six saves in goal to record the shutout for River Valley.

In Grass Valley — Connor Estrada carded a team-low 43, but the Miners were on their game and handed the Honkers a loss at the Alta Sierra Country Club.
Kyle Albers fired a 52, Riley Horan shot a 54, Thomas Bishop recorded a 55 and Anthony Vazquez carded a 57 to round out the scores for Yuba City (1-1).

In Red Bluff — The Huskies swept singles to start their season off with a win.
Nick Fortna (6-4, 4-6, 6-1), Billy Thompson (6-2, 6-0), Driaan Van-Zyl (7-5, 6-0), Jared Miller (6-3, 6-1), Dat Yell (6-0, 6-0), Justin Elford (6-1, 6-1) are cruised in singles.
Thompson and Van-Zyl teamed up for an 8-1 doubles victory.

In Wheatland — Zack Bodey went a perfect 5 for 5 with a pair of triples and five runs scored as the Pirates blew past the Lions in a nonleague contest.
Ryan Burdick finished 3 for 4 with a home run, three RBIs and scored five times, and John Scruggs went 2 for 4 with five RBIs and five runs scored in the victory for Wheatland (1-1).

In Grass Valley — Steve Robinson struck out nine in 52⁄3 innings, Cameron Spencer went 3 for 3 with two RBIs and the Falcons cruised past the Miners.
Logan Zaragoza, who also finished the game off in relief, went 2 for 4 with a double, while Dace Asher went 2 for 5 with a pair of RBIs. Jordan Greminger also drove in two runs for the Falcons (2-0).
