Letter: Simple fires solution offers big benefits

July 24, 2008 - 11:39 PM

Just to try to make things simple, I wish to propose a solution to wildfires which will stop the fires, clear out the deadwood, thin the forests, and tremendously boost the economy and bring us greatly increased prosperity and healthier forests.

The solution is to build a fleet of about eight supertanker firefighting aircraft – three DC-10s and five Boeing-747s – and use them to suppress wildfires immediately, as well as use them in other states and countries, thus generating revenue for California and the companies involved.

Then, as the forests would become more dense, allow private interests to thin out the forests, thus creating more jobs. This would tremendously lower the price of lumber and construction, making homes more affordable and preventing these massive wildfire disasters every year.
