Yuba County dad who accidentally shot son gets 60 days in jail

A Yuba County man who accidentally shot and seriously injured his son, 14, when a shotgun discharged, was sentenced Monday in Yuba County Superior Court to 60 days in jail and three years of probation.

Jason Eugene Holden, 36, was replacing the stock on the 20-gauge shotgun when it fired on Sept. 29. His son suffered injuries to his liver, lung and ribs. The teen, who was taken to the UC Davis Medical Center, said he felt as if a horse kicked him in the chest. He missed a month of school.

The father said he and his son are now able to joke about the shooting, according to the county probation report.

Jason Holden is a convicted felon and not allowed to possess firearms. He admitted to drinking two 16-ounce beers before the incident, according to county probation. He pleaded no contest to being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Holden was injured in 2010 when a 1,000 -pound steel canopy fell on him, the probation report stated. He works collecting fees at a swap meet.
