Three teams, two spots — the CIF section commissioners have their work cut out for them.
The commissioners will meet today and announce their selections for the inaugural Northern California Regional Championship games, a de facto play-in game for the prestigious CIF State Bowl games in Carson.
Sutter High's football team is hoping its squad is one of the two programs selected for the NorCal game in Division III. Only section champions are eligible for selection.
Other criteria the committee will use today are win-loss record, strength of schedule, head-to-head competition and common opponents.
Sutter qualified after defeating West Valley 38-31 in double overtime in the Northern Section Division II championship game on Nov. 24.
At 13-0, the Huskies are the No. 1 ranked team in the Northern Section, regardless of division, and have a key regular-season victory over Enterprise, the D-I Northern Section champ.
Sutter is in the mix with two other teams for a spot in the regional.
Marin Catholic (13-1), ranked No. 1 by Cal-Hi Sports, defeated previously undefeated El Cerrito, Cal-Hi Sports' No. 2 squad, on Saturday night in a 31-28 thriller to take home the program's ninth North Coast Section Division III crown.
With the strength of the NCS D-III bracket and Marin's résumé, the Wildcats are a shoe-in for one of the D-III NorCal spots.
That leaves the committee to pick between Sutter and Sacred Heart Prep.
Sacred Heart Prep (Atherton) edged Menlo (Atherton) in a 13-7 slugfest through a heavy storm Saturday night to clinch the Central Coast Section D-IV championship.
Sacred Heart went 12-1 this year, with its one loss coming to Open Division school Terra Nova of Pacifica.
Escalon was eliminated from contention after its 52-10 loss to Central Catholic on Saturday.
The Division III game will be played on Saturday, Dec. 8 at a neutral site. Game time and site will be both be announced today.
