Letter: More to battery chargers story
Regarding the Jan. 27 editorial, "Bureaucrats eyeing your device chargers:"
In short, the view expressed opposed the new rule and ended by saying that the California Energy Commission should be dismantled. It's interesting how telling only part of the story can warp the whole story.
Some facts that should have been considered, but were left out of the editorial, include:
• The so-called vampire battery chargers can suck up and waste as much as 60 percent of the electricity they consume.
• Some chargers waste electricity by drawing it even when a battery is full, or continue to draw energy even if devices aren't plugged in to it, i.e., laptops, cellphones, digital cameras, etc.
• This standby power use accounts for about 13 percent of residential electricity use in California.
It seems to me that with a savings of 13 percent from a PG&E bill month after month, better battery chargers are better for consumers and the environment.
