Hmong new year event planned at Yuba-Sutter fairgrounds

Yuba-Sutter’s Hmong population will also be hosting a sizable weekend celebration, with a festival for the community’s new year on Saturday and Sunday at the Yuba-Sutter Fairgrounds in Yuba City.

Beginning Saturday at 8 a.m., the event will feature entertainment, movies, vendors and merchants, food and traditional music and songs.

Traditionally tied to the end of harvest season, the Hmong New Year celebration takes place annually in areas with large Hmong communities and often involves both traditions within homes and among the larger community.

Events will be from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days, and take place at the fairgrounds, 422 Franklin Ave., Yuba City. The event is hosted by the Hmong American Association of Marysville.

In recent years, thousands of people have attended the Hmong New Year celebration, many of them from outside the year.
