Clutch pitching gives 49ers BVC victory

Nick Gauldin pitched the final two outs of the ninth inning, striking out two and stranding the tying run on third, to record the save and give Yuba College's baseball team a 6-5 Bay Valley Conference win at Solano on Saturday.


“Defensively we played real well all game,” said coach Tim Gloyd. “We played almost error-free baseball. We made some real good plays that ended the innings.”


Ryan Lane threw a runner out at home from right field to end the second inning for the 49ers (9-6, 1-1). Cameron Pembroke made an outstanding catch to end the fourth inning according to Gloyd.


Billy Thomas went 2-for-5 with an RBI, Pembroke went 3-for-4 with a double, Aaron Lowe went 3-for-5 with an RBI, and Jason Hamel went 2-for-4 with an RBI to lead the 49ers offensively.


TRACK AND FIELD


Yuba women eighth


The 49ers placed eighth as a team at the Beaver Relay at American River College.


Yuba's sprint medley team consisting of Alisa Yuhasz, Jessica Winslow, Kelsey Messmer, and Jill Hagey placed sixth with a combined time of 5 minutes and 18.12 seconds. The distance medley team of Sara Nelson, Yuhasz, Messmer, and Hagey placed fourth with a time of 15:47.38.


Yuhasz also placed sixth in the Javelin with a throw measuring 88 feet and 11 inches.

Kayla Ledford struck out eight batters in the championship game of the Yuba Sutter tournament to lead East Nicolaus to its second win over Marysville in the same day. Ledford was named tournament MVP.


Lydia White and Nikki Bingaman were both named to the all-tournament team. Heidi Goss hit a two-run home run in the championship game. Ledford had a triple.


In East Nicolaus' and Marysville's first game, Ledford gave up no hits and only one run. Hannah Twitchell and Ledford each hit a three-run home run. Holli Bingaman had a two-run homer.


White Pitched against Live Oak giving up one hit and no runs. Nikki Bingaman had a home run, a triple, and four RBI. Ashley Osier had a triple and three RBI, and Ledford had two RBI.

Sutter's Jessica Moore gave up eight hits and five runs in the championship game of the Pleasant Valley tournament as the Division IV Huskies took second place behind Division I West Valley in extra innings.


Moore was 2-for-4 and Chanell Thurman was 2-for-4 with a double.


Against Paradise, Moore gave up just one run on two hits. Heidi Mcallister, Ashley Rovito, and Sam Sizemore all were 2-for-3.


Mcallister gave up two hits and no runs to Yuba City in the second game. Mcallister was 3-for-4 with a triple. Moore, Thurman, and Joline Grayham were all 2-for-3. Kim Kaiser went 1-for-3 with a double to lead the Honkers.


Moore gave up two hits and no runs in the first game against Pleasant Valley. Moore was also 2-for-2 and hit a home run. Thurman was 2-for-3 with two triples.


JV BASEBALL


Sutter 8, Gridley 3


Colusa 9, Sutter 3


Brian Southers pitched four innings, giving up two hits and struck out four to lead Sutter (2-1) to a third place finish over Gridley at the Sutter JV Tournament.


Justin Herbert hit a double and a home run in the win he had three RBIs. Bentley Nunes also had an RBI and a run scored.


Nikos Krohn had an RBI triple and Josh Shinkle had an RBI single to lead the Huskies, but they lost to Colusa.
