PREP ROUNDUP: Sutter boys hoops top Winters
The Sutter High boys basketball team closed out the first cycle of Butte View League play on a high note.
The Huskies took down Winters 55-49 at home on Thursday night to finish the first half of their BVL schedule at 2-2.
Sutter (14-7 overall) received a nice effort from Colin Taylor, who scored a team-high 14 points. Seth Landers added 11 points for the Huskies, who will begin the second cycle of BVL play on Feb. 1 against Wheatland.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Sutter 50, Winters 29
In Sutter — Erika Larsen put up a double-double for the Huskies with 13 points and 17 rebounds as Sutter coasted past Winters in a BVL victory.
Destiny Stevenson scored 14 to lead the Huskies in scoring, while Jaelyn Hoffman scored 10 points and made seven steals.
Jessie Jiminez tacked on six points for Sutter (15-5, 4-0), which completed its first cycle of league play undefeated.
Maxwell 42, Biggs 35
In Biggs — Kailey McKinley scored 15 points to go with 16 rebounds as the Panthers recorded a big Mid-Valley League win over the Wolverines.
Jessie Otterson added 10 points, while Jenna Powell poured in six points and hauled in seven rebounds.
Shelen Boyes and Ashley Azevedo both tallied five steals for Maxwell (10-4, 4-1).
GIRLS SOCCER
Sutter 4, Gridley 0
In Gridley — Jayden Garcia scored two goals and Jenna Lewis added another as the Huskies blanked the Bulldogs in a Butte View League match.
Sutter's fourth score came on an own goal by Gridley.
Martina Damboriena picked up an assist and Devan Reische made three saves in goal for the Huskies (14-2-1, 7-0-1).
Wheatland 2, Winters 2
In Wheatland — Daisy Colmenares and Sariah Garaua scored a goal each to help the Pirates to a draw in their BVL match against the Warriors.
Hannah Luevano and Amy Nichols notched the assists for Wheatland (2-6-2, 0-6-1).
BOYS SOCCER
Gridley 3, Sutter 1
In Gridley — Humberto Arroyo, Juan Velasquez and Eusevio Cervantes all scored goals in the Bulldogs' BVL victory over the Huskies.
Cervantes and Alfonzo Hernandez also picked up assists for Gridley (9-7-2, 5-2-1).
Garrett Wallace scored the lone goal for the Huskies (5-8-1, 3-5-1) on an assist from Bruno Flores.
Sutter coach Tim Danna said Collin Olmstead, Mike McPeters and Corey Wilhelm all played well defensively.
Live Oak 1, Durham 1
In Durham — The Trojans scored a goal in stoppage time to escape with an SVL tie against the Lions.
Edgar Diaz scored Live Oak's goal on a Jose Cuellar assist.
The Lions are now 9-1-2 overall and 4-0-1 in SVL-I action with a big game against Willows looming ahead on Tuesday.
Winters 4, Wheatland 1
In Wheatland — Senior Javier DeAnda scored his first ever high school goal on an assist from Dalton O'Brien as the Pirates fell to the Warriors in a BVL match.
Coach David West credited Oscar Morales with outstanding defensive play for Wheatland (1-10, 1-7).
WRESTLING
Lindhurst takes two duals
In Marysville — The Lindhurst High wrestling team won both of its dual meets at Marysville High with a 49-25 victory over Vacaville Christian followed by a 52-24 win over Bradshaw Christian.
The Blazers picked up three forfeit wins against Vacaville Christian. Jake Hughes won by pin in the 120-pound division, while Johnathan Hernandez (132) and Rigo Cole (138) also picked up pins.
Thongsai Tanadabouth (113) picked up an 11-6 victory. Edgar Rivera won 11-0 in his 160-pound bout and Kevin Travis took home a 10-8 victory.
Hughes, Cole and Justin Martinez (285) all recorded pins in the Blazers' win over Bradshaw Christian. Hernandez added a 15-4 victory as Lindhurst racked up five wins by forfeit.
JV BOYS BASKETBALL
River Valley 64, Yuba City 61, OT
In Yuba City — The Falcons edged the Honkers in a Tri-County Conference matchup at Falcon Gymnasium.
Rohin Basi and Sam Van Dusen both recorded double-doubles for the Falcons (11-6, 4-1). Basi and Van Dusen both scored 16 points, while Van Dusen amassed 17 rebounds and Basi had 12 boards.
Sukh Sooch scored 15 points and Robert Quintero tacked on 10 for RV.
Parker Lowe led Yuba City (11-10, 4-1) with 12 points and 15 rebounds, while Angel Hernandez dropped in 16 points. John Horn tacked on 12 points for Yuba City.
FROSH BOYS BASKETBALL
Yuba City 57, River Valley 43
In Yuba City — The Honkers received a 28-point effort from Ryan Besso in the TCC victory.
Besso also pulled down 21 rebounds and Josh Clayton scored eight points for YC (13-10, 4-0).
Jacob Farmer led River Valley (11-10, 4-1) with nine points, while Jagjot Takhar added eight points and Gurjeet Singh tacked on seven.
