PREP ROUNDUP: Sutter girls soccer earns title game berth
Maxwells boys hoops moves on
The Sutter High girls soccer team earned a chance to play for its ninth consecutive Northern Section championship.
The Huskies routed visiting West Valley 6-0 on Tuesday in the Northern Section Division II semifinals.
Sutter will host Butte View League foe Orland on Saturday in the championship game, a rematch from last season. The Trojans beat Winters 2-1 on Tuesday.
Sutter went 2-0-1 against Orland during BVL play, including an 8-0 victory on Feb. 7.
Erika Linch scored three goals for the Huskies against West Valley and assisted two more goals. Fellow senior Jayden Garcia scored twice and also picked up an assist.
Ciarra Beymer scored and both Kelsey Graham and Jenna Lewis tacked on assists for Sutter (19-2-1). Devan Reische made five saves in goal.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Maxwell 74, Redding Adv. 48
In Maxwell — Zach Troughton scored 14 points, George Barajas added 11 and eight assists, and the Panthers cruised to a victory to open the Northern Section Division VI playoffs.
No. 5 Maxwell (17-6) will visit No. 4 Paradise Adventist in the second round on Thursday.
Barajas also contributed five steals, while Trent Mathis had nine points and seven rebounds for the Panthers.
Bryce Perry and Isaias Martinez each scored seven points.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Winters 63, Gridley 61, 3OT
In Winters — Ashtyn MacFarlane and Alexa Garcia both recorded double-doubles, but the Bulldogs saw their season come to an end with a triple-overtime loss to the Warriors in the opening round of the Northern Section Division IV playoffs
MacFarlane finished with 15 points and 17 rebounds, and Garcia added 15 points and 11 boards for No. 9-seeded Gridley, which ended the year with a 9-17 record.
Megan Anthony had 16 points and nine rebounds in the loss.
No. 8 Winters will play at top-seeded Sutter in the second round on Thursday.
New Life 46, Stockton Chr. 40
In Olivehurst — Haley Moody scored 21 points, Elicia Villafranco finished with 17 and the Crusaders topped Stockton Christian in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division VI playoff opener.
With the victory, New Life (20-3) reached 20 wins for the first time in program history.
The No. 3 Crusaders, who will travel to No. 2 Valley Christian on Thursday, also got six points from Rachel Whiteley.
