Letter: Support of Bok Kai Temple reward
Comments 0 | Recommend 0It is wonderful to see that the Bok Kai Temple is finally "on the rebound," and to know that so many people, Caucasian and Chinese descendants alike, have cared enough to donate their time and money to make this a reality. This includes Friends of the Marysville Bok Kai Temple Inc. This group has held many fundraisers the past five years and received donations from members, local organizations, the Chinese Consolidated and Benevolent Association of San Francisco, and many individuals.
These accumulated funds paid for the temple and enough for the matching funds that was required by the California Cultural and Historical Endowment in order for the Chinese community to qualify for the grant they were awarded on the third and final disbursement of Proposition 40 money.
Mike Moyers, the grant writer, submitted applications on all three grant awards. The third time was a charm for the Sahm Fow Marysville Chinese Community (formerly known as the Marysville Chinese Community), trustee owners of the temple who applied for the grant. And now the restoration has begun so the temple will be closed until August.
Continuing with their fundraising activities, Friends of the Marysville Bok Kai Temple is already making plans for their second "Moon Festival," a major fundraiser. It will be held in September in the historic Chinatown of old Marysville. Only 100 tickets will be available. Last year's "Moon Festival" was very successful and a lot of fun for everyone.
