PREP ROUNDUP: Marysville blasts Sutter softball in opener

May leads Wheatland to victory

The Marysville High softball team kicked off its 2013 campaign in impressive fashion by pounding out 15 hits en route to a 14-3 victory over host Sutter in the season opener for both teams at Ruth Lowman Field.

Morgan Welch went 3 for 3 with three RBIs, Mikayla Anderson was 3 for 5 with three RBIs and Azja Matta finished 2 for 5 with a pair of RBIs for Marysville, which saw eight of its nine players record at least one hit in the game.

Freshman Cassidy Clavelle went 2 for 4, Brina Buttacavoli belted a two-run home run and Jamie Sexton added an RBI-double. Tressa Arostegui struck out three in a complete-game, three-hitter to record the win.

Andrea Little, Madison Levine and Jayden Garcia each had a single to provide the offense for Sutter.

Wheatland 9, Lincoln 1

In Wheatland — The Pirates strung together seven consecutive hits during a seven-run third inning and cruised the rest of the way to top the Fighting Zebras in their season opener.

Tah-Nee Rios went 2 for 3 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored, and sophomore Hannah Howard finished 2 for 3 to lead the offensive attack for Wheatland. Senior Randi May struck out 10 and didn't walk a batter in a complete-game effort to notch the win.

The Pirates lost the junior varsity game 8-5. Amber Hall and Gabby Lopez cracked two hits each for Wheatland.

BASEBALL

Sutter 18, Marysville 0

In Sutter — The Huskies followed up their 22-run outburst in their season-opening win over Paradise on Tuesday by scoring 18 runs in a five-inning victory over the Indians at Arata Field.

Lucas Cryer was 2 for 2 with a double and three RBIs, Colton Minton went 2 for 2 with a double and an RBI and Hayden Heilman finished 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI to lead the way for Sutter (2-0).

Randy Post added a two-run double and Trenton McDaniel drove in a pair of runs as well. Brad Bonnenfant struck out eight and allowed two hits over four innings of work to pick up the win.

Chad Perry went 2 for 2 with a double for Marysville (2-2), which opens Golden Empire League play on Friday at Mesa Verde.

The Huskies also won the junior varsity game 11-1 in five innings.

Brendon Nelson struck out 10 and allowed three hits over five innings to earn the win, Tyler Minton went 2 for 3 with a double and two RBIs, and Ross Applegarth finished 2 for 2 with an RBI for Sutter (2-0).

Pierce 7, Lower Lake 5

In Lower Lake — Joey Hernandez went a perfect 3 for 3 and scored twice, Dalton Sachs went 2 for 4 with three RBIs and the Bears opened their season with a win over the Trojans.

Oscar Sanchez was 2 for 4 with an RBI and Sachs struck out three and allowed no runs over two innings of relief to record the win.
