PREP WRESTLING: Sutter grapplers win section title
YC, RV send six to Masters
A week after being bested by Orland High in the Butte View League championships, the Sutter High wrestling team got its revenge when it counted.
Six Huskies took home individual championships as Sutter claimed the Northern Section Division II title with 221 team points, edging Orland (195 points) at Sutter High on Saturday.
Sutter bested the 10-team field and will send 11 grapplers to the Northern Section Masters Meet, scheduled for this Friday and Saturday at the Redding Civic Center.
Hunter Minton (134 pounds), Alex Ingram (154), Riley Vickner (172), Chase Gildea (184), Michael Thompson (197) and Reid Melani (287) all took home first-place honors for the Huskies.
Gage Kim (108), Julian Kim (115), Zachary Bell-Mathews (140) and Trevor Holt (222) all placed second and Chase Miles (147) took fifth to round out the Huskies' Masters qualifiers.
Wheatland also sent all 11 of its wrestlers to the Masters Meet and finished fifth as a team with 92.5 team points.
Leading the way for the Pirates was Kalan Hastey, who took second in the 170-pound division. Ryan Franken (120) and Andrew Gonzales (220) both placed third.
Robert Zatraneau (108), Jon Cerboni (134), Austin Shinn (140) and Tony Ortiz (287) all took fourth, and both Mikey Hawkins (147) and Jordyn Jones (154) placed sixth.
Gridley's Haiden Johnson (122) was the Bulldogs' lone gold medalist, while Skyler Franklin (108) and Jonathan Villapania (147) each took third. Kyle Rutter (154) rounded out Gridley's Masters qualifiers with a fourth-place finish.
Live Oak's Kirk Thao (128) took second and Andrew Lopez (115) placed third.
Falcons, Honkers qualify
In Sacramento — Three River Valley and three Yuba City wrestlers qualified for next week's Masters Meet after strong showings at the Sac-Joaquin Section Division III Championships at Foothill High.
Qualifying for the Falcons were Timmy Webb at 154 pounds and Jordan Davis at 184, both of whom took second place at the event. Logan Morace also qualified after taking fourth at 170 pounds
Yuba City was led by 195-pounder Westley McMahon, who placed second. Freshman Mansoor Ahmadi (115) and Isaac Bishop (120) also advanced for the Honkers following fourth-place finishes.
The top four wrestlers in each weight class qualified for the Masters Meet, which will be held on Friday and Saturday at the Stockton Arena.
