Bears win Biggs tourney

Every Pierce High player scored - led by Martin Corona's 11 points - and the Bears were a perfect 3-0 at the Biggs Tournament, defeating Greenville 64-24 Saturday.


Corona was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player. He was joined on the all-tournament team by teammates Jake Geyer and Zack Martinez.


Michael Barber added nine points for Pierce (11-3), while Cesar Barba, Kyle Schaad and Martinez each scored eight. Geyer finished with seven.


Forest Lake Chr. 57, Faith Chr. 46


The Falcons outscored the Lions 22-14 in the fourth period to win the Central Valley Christian League game.


Michael Garrett scored 17 points and Hayden Keeley added 12 for Faith Christian (7-3, 1-1).


WRESTLING


Sutter wins at Sonoma


Sutter's Tyler Holt took first place in the 160-pound division and was named the tournament's middleweight Most Valuable Wrestler to lead the Huskies to a first-place finish over 28 teams at the Valley of the Moon tournament in Sonoma. Holt was 7-0 in the tournament and has a season record of 22-2.


Chad Moran (152) went 8-0 in the tournament, while Troy Robison (215) also took first, finishing 7-0 . Both wrestlers are 22-2. Robison has 21 pins.


Also placing for Sutter were Kenny Hicks (103, 3rd), Montana Payne (119, 4th), Justin Burrow (125, 5th), Rowdy Robinson (130, 4th), Derrick Caruthers (145, 5th) and Chris Benson (171, 5th).


Wheatland best at El Camino


Kenny Smith improved to 14-0 on the year and was one of three Pirate champions at the 18-team El Camino Invitational in Sacramento.


Smith won at 125 pounds, while Andrew Mathis, at 135, and Rusty Hulsey, at 140, also won their divisions.


Other Wheatland placers were Tommy Mathis (112, 3rd), Chris Gifford (152, 3rd), Alex Pinto (275, 4th), Matt Farinha (189, 5th), Bryan Larcom (215, 5th) and Matt Hulsey (140, 6th).


Yuba City took third in the tournament. Placing for the Honkers were, Brian Benbow (130, 4th), Wes Nesting (135, 2nd), Jairo Chavez (145, 2nd), John Miles (171, 2nd), and Jordan Holmes (275, 1st). Holmes was 3-0 in the tournament.


GIRLS BASKETBALL


Forest Lake Chr. 65, Faith Chr. 23


Kim Martin scored seven points for Faith Christian (7-3, 0-2), but the Lions lost to the Falcons at home.


Live Oak 45, East Nicolaus 34


Ana Alvarado scored 18 points. Laci Rogers added 10 and and all-tourney pick Amanda Benzel finished with eight for the Lions (3-9)


Michelle Wasina, also an all-toruney selection, scored 13 for the Spartans.


JV WRESTLING


Sutter wins Mother Lode


The Huskies swept through the six-team Nevada Union Mother Lode Tournament, winning all five dual competitions including the final against Lindhurst, 51-19, to take first place.


The Blazers took second behind division champions Tyler Goodwin (119 pounds) and James Williams (215). Going 4-1 at the tourney were Ma Xiong (135), Brad Olesha (145), Bradley Hunter (160) and Josh Clark (189). Mike Yang (125) and Torrey Harris (140) recorded 3-2 marks.


The Blazers defeated Laguna Creek (60-3), Folsom (51-23), Colfax (51-28) and Oakmont (40-34) before losing to the Huskies.


Information on Sutter wrestlers was not available.


JV BOYS BASKETBALL


Live Oak 63, East Nicolaus 47


Daniel Gonzalez scored 16 points, Bo Kanada had 15 and Juan Robles added 10 for the Lions (11-1).

BOYS BASKETBALL


Maxwell 67, Princeton 46


Alonso Chavez scored 14 points and Brandon Ottenwalter added 13 to lead Maxwell to the win at Princeton.


Guillermo Rodriguez scored 13 points to lead Princeton.
