PREP ROUNDUP: RV volleyball claims tourney title

Lady Huskies 2-2 in Carmichael

The River Valley High volleyball team stayed perfect by sweeping the competition on Saturday at the inaugural Marysville Volleyball Tournament.

The Falcons (9-0) defeated Wheatland, Colusa, Cordova, Our Lady of Guadalupe, Marysville and Faith Christian to take home the tournament crown.

Leading the charge for RV was the sister tandem of Taylor and Courtney Massengale, who were both named to the all-tournament team. Taylor Massengale tallied 48 kills while Courtney had 27 on the day.

They were set up all day by Amrita Dale, who dished out 80 assists. McKenzie Skyberg doled out 26 assists.

Sierra Pedley was solid in the back row with 47 digs, Dale served 19 aces and Meaghan Bains was credited with outstanding all-around play for the Falcons.

Wheatland took second with a 5-1 tourney record, led by all-tournament selection Kirstin Johnson and Marysville placed third with Reyna Williamson earning all-tourney honors.

Shon Ritchie was an all-tournament pick for Faith Christian.

Marysville was 6-0 in the JV tournament with Savanna Harris and Haley Williamson earning all-tournament honors.

River Valley finished second with a 5-1 day and all-tournament selections were Lauren Kroeger and Abby Stamper.

Emily Wolfgram earned all-tourney for Faith and Kyle McCray did the same for Wheatland.

Sutter competes in tourney

In Carmichael — The Sutter High volleyball team competed at the Carmichael Tournament on Saturday, finishing tourney play with a 2-2 record.

The Huskies (2-3) finished 2-1 to place first in pool play before falling in the first round of gold bracket play.

Sutter opened the day with a 20-25, 25-22, 15-13 loss to Westmoor, followed by straight-set wins over River City and San Marin.

The Huskies lost to Sequoia in the the gold bracket 25-20, 25-19.

Ava Payton had a big day for Sutter with 21 kills and 13 digs over the four matches. Savannah Besso dished out 32 assists.

Bianca Almeida tallied 14 kills and 10 digs with three aces from the service line. Alix Russell picked up 10 digs, served five aces and was 100 percent from the service line.

Kylee Sallaberry dished out 26 assists and tacked on six kills and six aces.

Erika Larsen was solid at the net with 10 blocks and Shelby Hil added four blocks for the Huskies.

Faith places fourth at tournament

In Modesto — The Faith Christian Lions placed fourth at the Big Valley Christian Tournament on Saturday.

The Lions (3-5-1) opened tournament play with a 4-3 loss to Millennium. Gun Lee, Drew Tollenaar and Sam Ithurburn all scored goals in the loss.

Faith bounced back with a 3-2 win over Rite of Passage with Ithurburn's two-goal performance and a score from Chase Gordon leading the way.

The Lions followed that victory with a 6-2 win over host Big Valley Christian. Ithurburn had a hat trick, Lee scored twice and Caleb Crist rounded out the scoring.

Micah Atkins scored the Lions' only goal in a 3-1 loss to Denair in the third-place game.

Coach Robert Ripley credited Craig Andrus, Luke Bicknell, Joe Valrey and Drew LeBlanc with solid play on defense.
