Name: Nancy "Pickles" Davis
Age: 59
Family: Three daughters.
Residence: Yuba City.
How long have you lived in the Yuba-Sutter area? About 34 years. I graduated from Marysville High School in 1972.
Hobbies, interests: I paint rocks and pickle jars with Kinkade-like painting and garden-related pictures. I got best of show for a pickle jar I painted for the fair. I like to garden and the outdoors. I also like to make cards for family and friends for special occasions.
For what groups do you volunteer? I volunteer for Butchie's Pool in Yuba City, a pool for the handicapped. I started as a member there getting physical therapy and then started going to the volunteer meetings. I help with the fundraisers like the chili feed coming up, with the Easter egg hunt at the Yuba-Sutter fairgrounds and other fundraisers like a craft and bake sale. We have the annual biker's run on Sept. 15 that I'm also volunteering for.
I also volunteer for the Christian Assistance Network. I help give out clothing.
How do you fit volunteering into your schedule? Volunteering comes first, then everything else in my life comes second.
Words of advice: Commit yourself (to volunteering) completely; don't just show up for one day.
Why be a volunteer? I can't answer that — it's something people have to ask themselves. If you have spare time, just volunteer. It's a good way to meet people and get involved in the community.
I like to be around the people. At Butchie's Pool, we have handicapped kids and they always need help. I've always been this way, giving. I've never been a negative person. I like to focus on the positive.
Quote: "It makes me feel good helping others."
