Letter: Safe water worth the price to be paid

How sad that having safe water has to become a battle. Commonsense should dictate that procuring healthy water should not be measured in dollars and cents.

Yet, that seems to have become an issue for some in the Hillcrest Water District. I wish that those who are opposed would devote that much effort to the rise of our fuel prices.

Paying $20-plus a month extra for safe drinking water is nothing compared to $200-plus per month for gasoline over the past four years. Nowhere have I read that the City of Yuba City has made windfall profits for past improvements nor have I ever received a letter from the Big Oil companies justifying their drastic increases.

Four years ago, the Tierra Buena community had to surrender to a similar water situation, and at the same time incorporate into the city to receive that service. Yes, there were some that did not fully support that idea at the time, but we did it without a battle.

Since then, we have reaped the benefits: not only in safe drinking water, but also great public services. I believe the people in Hillcrest to be fortunate because the charges to them now are the same of what we had to pay for four years ago.

By the way, our monthly bill, with water meter, averages out to be $20.35 per month, plus assessment.

Yes, we do irrigate our lawn and garden, wash our cars, dishes, and laundry, and even drink the water. If you want to be informed of the truth, see the Appeal-Democrat’s video or read the mayor’s letter online.

Shooting from the hip never gets the right results nor will the possible acquisition from an outside corporation.
