PREP ROUNDUP: Three local volleyball players named to all-star game
Three local volleyball players received a prestigious honor this week.
Wheatland High's Kirstin Johnson, Sutter's Erika Larsen and Gridley's Ashtyn MacFarlane were all selected to play in the 12th annual North vs. South All-Star volleyball game at Willows High on Sunday at 5 p.m.
All three players were also named to the All-Butte View League team and Larsen was selected as the BVL MVP.
The South team will be coached by Wheatland's Ashley Anderson and Willows coach Carol Martin.
WRESTLING
Wheatland 75, Marysville 0
In Marysville — The Pirates racked up seven wins by pin and seven more via forfeit as they trounced the Indians in both teams' season opener on Wednesday night.
Ricardo Basurto recorded a win by pin in the 120-pound weight class and his teammates Ryan Franken (126), Taylor Hicks (132), Marc Campos (145), Jordan Jones (160), Kalan Hastey (170) and Kaden Perkins (195) all won by pin.
Wheatland 43, Yuba City 24
In Marysville — In their second dual meet of the night, the Pirates took down the Honkers at Marysville High's Lesta Joubert Gymnasium.
Austin Shinn picked up a win by pin in the 138-pound division and Hastey picked up his second win by pin of the night.
Franken won by major decision and 220-pounder Andrew Gonzales won by decision.
Leading Yuba City was freshman 120-pounder Mansoor Ahmadi, who picked up a victory via pin fall.
The Honkers picked up wins by decision from Eric Scheiber (132), Thomas Bishop (145), Adam Thornton (160) and Cody McMahon (182).
BOYS SOCCER
Colusa 3, Wheatland 0
In Colusa — Adrian Garcia scored a pair of goals and Gustavo Sanchez added a goal and an assist to propel the RedHawks past the Pirates for their first victory of the season.
Jose Santana, Fernando Morales, Luis Padilla and Ryan Manning turned in strong defensive efforts for Colusa (1-0-1), while goalkeeper Fernando Amador finished with 11 saves to record the shutout.
Alan Mendoza recorded 14 saves in goal, and Omar Valeriano and Martin Elizalde played well at midfield in the loss for the Pirates (0-1).
West Valley 2, Sutter 1
In Sutter — Bruno Flores scored on an assist from Collin Olmstead, but the Huskies fell just short in their season opener against the Eagles.
Tyler Eck notched five saves in goal, Franklin Tarke shined defensively, and Juan Gonzalez and Greg Martinez played well at midfield for the Huskies (0-1).
GIRLS SOCCER
Sutter 5, West Valley 0
In Sutter — Jayden Garcia scored four goals, Erika Linch added another and the Huskies blanked the Eagles at home in nonleague play.
Hailey Fear picked up an assist and Devan Reische made three saves in goal as the Huskies improved to 2-0.
Coach Jeff Stanhope said Martina Damboriena, Jenna Lewis, Andrea Little and Alyssa McCurry all played well defensively.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Del Campo 81, River Valley 43
In Fair Oaks — The Falcons were roughed up by perennial section power Del Campo as Stuart Bradley led River Valley with 13 points.
Deepak Leal scored seven points and Josh Dhatt added five rebounds in the loss for the Falcons (0-2), who will go for win No. 1 on Monday at home against Galt.
Willows 67, East Nicolaus 45
In Arbuckle — Drew Orr scored 22 points and Ty Shill came down with eight rebounds as the Spartans opened their season with a loss to the Honkers in the opening round of the Pierce Tournament.
East Nicolaus will play Maxwell in the consolation round today at 4:30 p.m.
The Spartans' junior varsity team beat Maxwell 60-51 in the JV portion of the tourney.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Maxwell 41, Princeton 35
In Princeton — Ashley Azevedo dropped in 14 points and pulled down four rebounds to lead the Panthers past the Eagles in the season opener for both teams.
Jessie Otterson added six points and eight boards, and Shelon Boyes swiped four steals in the win for Maxwell (1-0).
