PREP ROUNDUP: Wheatland wrestling takes BVL opener

Falcons, Honkers fall in TCC matches

The Wheatland High wrestling team won five matches by pin and captured three more wins by way of forfeit to earn a 47-30 victory at Winters in the Butte View League opener on Wednesday night.

Robert Zatraneau won by pin in the 106-pound division and was followed by pins from Ryan Franken at 120, Jordyn Jones at 160, Kalan Hastey at 170 and Tony Ortiz at 285.

With the victory, the Pirates improved to 16-5 in dual meets this season.

Natomas 46, River Valley 23

In Sacramento — The Falcons forfeited in five weight classes in a Tri-County Conference loss to the Nighthawks.

Manjinder Johal (160) won by pin, Carlos Robles (120) and Austin Potts (152) both won by major decision, and Dalton Dazo (138) won by decision to lead the way for River Valley (4-5, 0-2).

Jordan Davis moved up from 195 pounds to the 220-pound weight class and faced Jordan Sepeda, who is currently ranked No. 4 in the state. Davis controlled the first period and took a 5-4 lead before the 30-pound weight difference led to a pin late in the second round. Davis is now 20-4 on the year.

River Valley won the junior varsity match 30-0 to improve to 2-0 in the TCC.

Joseph Aurre (138), Chris Hansen (145), Aaron Benton (152), Dallas Abrahms (160) and Shaun Clar (170) each recorded pins for the Falcons.

Pioneer 47, Yuba City 25

In Yuba City — The Honkers dropped a TCC dual meet at Honker Gym to the Patriots.

Mansoor Ahmadi picked up a win by pinfall in the 113-pound division and Thomas Bishop did the same in 145s for Yuba City. Adam Thornton also won by pin in the 160-pound weight class.

Marcus Sillas (120) won by decision and Danny Kang (126) picked up a major decision to round out the scoring for Yuba City (9-5, 1-1).

BOYS BASKETBALL

Pierce 61, Biggs 37

In Arbuckle — Oscar Dorantes picked up a double-double with 19 points and 15 rebounds to pace the Bears in a nonleague win over the Wolverines.

Hayden Kalfsbeek scored 14 points and Joey Hernandez added 13 points for the Bears (10-4).

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Dixon 45, Marysville 42

In Marysville — Bayshta Aguila scored 22 points, but the Indians dropped their Golden Empire League opener at Lesta Joubert Gymnasium to the Rams.

Holly Tarr added a double-double with 12 points and 16 rebounds. Coach Shawnesy McBride credited Myers Lor with outstanding defensive play as Lor totaled seven rebounds for the Indians (8-10, 0-1).

Capital Christian 77, Lindhurst 31

In Sacramento — Sarah May led the Blazers with 13 points as they were routed by the Cougars in the GEL opener.

Reyna Zuniga picked up six points for Lindhurst (3-9, 0-1).

Wheatland 57, Live Oak 30

In Wheatland — Kassidy Heuvelhorst put in another strong effort with a game-high 21 points to go with six rebounds and the Lions cruised past the Lions in nonleague play.

Halen Mariano chipped in with 12 points, eight steals and three assists, and Thalia Kilburn finished with nine points and three steals in the win for Wheatland (8-8).

Gridley 62, Colusa 36

In Colusa — Megan Anthony scored 15 points and Ashtyn MacFarlane added 12 to lead the Bulldogs (4-12) past the RedHawks in a nonleague victory.

Teale Stacey led Colusa (8-7) with 14 points and Paige Townzen added nine.

BOYS SOCCER

Willows 3, Colusa 2

In Willows — Gustavo Sanchez scored off an assist from Adrian Garcia to open the scoring, but the Honkers scored the next three goals to hand the RedHawks a Sacramento Valley League-II setback.

Garcia assisted Sanchez again in the 79th minute, but Colusa (4-6-1, 1-4) just missed on two chances to tie the game late in the loss.

Fernando Amador recorded 16 saves in goal and fullbacks Fernando Morales, Pedro Lopez, Ryan Manning and Luis Padilla each played well defensively, coach Dan Kiely said.

JV BOYS BASKETBALL

Capital Christian 35, Lindhurst 34

In Sacramento — Josh Yang scored 16 points as the Blazers were edged by the Cougars on Tuesday in the GEL opener for both teams.

Dixon 62, Marysville 40

In Marysville — Matthew Butcher scored 15 points and Casey Carlson added 10 points and seven rebounds in the GEL loss for the Indians (3-14, 0-1) on Tuesday night.

JV GIRLS BASKETBALL

Gridley 42, Colusa 36

In Colusa — Mollie Townzen scored 14 points, Andrea Thomas had nine and Sally Loeza added up seven for Colusa (9-4) in a nonleague loss to the Bulldogs.

On Tuesday, Loeza scored 12 points and Jasmine Savage scored eight more in a 41-33 win at East Nicolaus.

Yuba City 38, Rio Linda 20

In Yuba City — Megan Lockhart scored 12 points and Jordan Coxe added 10 more to lead the Honkers (6-6) to a nonleague win over the Knights on Tuesday.

River Valley 44, Granite Bay 28

In Yuba City — Jessica Ruiz scored 11 points and Courtney Massengale had eight in the Falcons' nonleague win over the Grizzlies on Tuesday.

Meaghan Bains and Shaina Rasul both added seven points in the win for River Valley (8-5).
