Olivehurst man arrested in cane attack

An Olivehurst man is scheduled to be arraigned today, police said, after beating a Yuba City man with a cane.

Donald H. Wideman, 48, was booked into the Sutter County Jail on Tuesday without bail on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon.

Wideman was arguing with an unidentified 35-year-old woman Monday afternoon outside in the 800 block of Jones Road. It remains unclear what they were arguing about, Yuba City Police spokeswoman Shawna Pavey said.

"At some point during the argument, a friend of the female came outside and intervened," Pavey said.

The friend, Brandon Jones, was visiting the woman, police said.

Jones and Wideman exchanged words before Wideman swung his walking cane at Jones, striking him in the head, Pavey said.

Jones suffered a cut to his head and was taken to Rideout Regional Medical Center in Marysville for treatment.

He was not listed as a patient Tuesday afternoon.

Wideman was arrested last month in Yuba County in a domestic violence assault incident. Yuba County prosecutors are still reviewing the case and no charges have been filed, authorities said.

Wideman's only other prior convictions include a citation for hunting out of season in 1993 in Sutter County and driving on a suspended in 2002 in Yuba County, according to court records.
