Sox slide past Wildcats

Marysville hangs on for 10-8 win

It was a little close for comfort, but the Marysville Gold Sox completed their latest four-game homestand 3-1 with a 10-8 victory over the Auburn Wildcats on Sunday at Appeal-Democrat Park.

Both teams tallied 10 hits each as the Wildcats battled back from an early deficit.

Marysville (29-10) jumped on Auburn for three runs in the bottom of the first inning as Victor Romero and Tito Quiñones both drove in a run with a single.

The Sox tacked on four runs in the fourth inning courtesy of two RBIs from Romero. Tommy Lininger knocked in a pair of runs with a single as well.

That 7-0 lead looked solid until Auburn mounted its comeback.

The Wildcats scored two runs in the fifth inning to make things 7-2.

Romero's ninth home run of the season extended Marysville's lead to 8-2. He finished the game with four RBIs and three hits.

Auburn exploded for four runs in the top of the eighth to cut the Gold Sox's lead to 8-7.

A two-run bottom of the eighth inning gave the Gold Sox insurance as they hung on for the 10-8 victory.

Kenton Bevacqua (4-1) was the winning pitcher as he went six innings, allowing two runs. Patrick O'Rourke allowed a homer in the ninth, though recorded the save.

Only eight games remain on Marysville's schedule.

The Sox welcome in the Nor Cal Longhorns for a three-game series, beginning Thursday.

Marysville currently trails both the Humboldt Crabs and Seattle Studs in the Horizon Air Summer Series standings.
