Woman crashes, stabs self

Police have not released the name of a 54-year-old Corning woman who was reportedly driving under the influence of alcohol in a Ford Ranger pickup when she struck a mailbox and garbage can on North Street, and then drove up onto a lawn at 2038 North St.

Corning police Chief Don Atkins said the woman got out of the pickup and then went into the residence and stabbed herself in the abdomen with a 10-inch knife.

She was transported to Enloe Medical Center in Chico by medical helicopter.

"We believe the woman is suffering mental issues," Atkins said. "The knife wound did not appear to be life threatening."
