Some 39 photographs of a variety of subjects line the walls of the Orland Art Center this month as members of the Tehama County Photo Club show off their work.

Orland gallery displaying work from 12 photographers

Photography and art often go hand-in-hand and that is the case for February's show at the Orland Center for the Arts gallery.

The diverse work of 12 photographers lines the walls with black and white and color pieces — many offering a painterly feel.

They are members of the Tehama County Photo Club, who live in Tehama, Glenn and Butte counties.

"The Artist and the Camera" runs through Feb. 23 at 732 Fourth St.

Arts Commissioner Rae Turnbull said the gallery tries to host one all photography show a year.

She said the Tehama County Photo Club is a "group of seriously dedicated photographers."

The group "juried" this show and chose 39 photos for the exhibit out of 80 images submitted, Turnbull said. The determining panel included five top photographers from the North State.

Many of the photographers are regional, national and international award winners, and their work includes a broad variety of styles, techniques and subjects, she said.

Cameras used include everything from an 8-by-10 film camera to the latest digital varieties.

"It is the artist's eye and skill with the camera that makes this art," Turnbull added.

Subjects include churches, landscapes, cowboys, bicycles, people and more.

The Tehama County Photo Club had its first meeting in June 2005 when a small group of enthusiastic photographers gathered to share their interest in photography, officials said.

Today it is a large group of people ranging from hobbyists to professionals who want to teach and mentor.

The club meets at the Family Resource Center in Red Bluff on the second Tuesday of the month at 6 p.m.

It also supports community organizations by collecting non-perishable food for the Resource Center and providing photography exhibits in conjunction with fundraising events.

The club sponsors its annual Images from a Glass Eye International Juried Photography Show which has entries from across the globe, officials said, representing many cultures that compete for a place in the exhibit and prizes.
