LOCAL ROUNDUP: Wheatland wrestling thrives at Corning tourney

The Wheatland High wrestling team saw four competitors place at the 35-team Corning Tournament on Saturday.

Leading the way for the Pirates was Andrew Gonzales, who followed up a first-place finish at the Jason White Memorial last week by taking third in the 220-pound division.

Mikey Hawkins placed fourth in the 152-pound bracket, and Robert Wilson (126) and Austin Shinn (138) both took seventh place for the Pirates.

Locals compete at JV tourney

In Sutter — Seven local wrestlers recorded first-place finishes at the Sutter JV Classic.

Wheatland's Marcelo Oliver (122) and Taylor Hicks (128), Sutter's Tyler Anderson (147), Aiden Lang (172), Roger Snow (172.1) and Tyler Luna (197), and Live Oak's Jose Gonzalez (287) each took first in their respective divisions to lead the local contingent.

Marysville's James Anderson (122) and Trevor Spencer (184), Sutter's Tanner Baroni (162) and Drew Melani (287), Live Oak's Xavier Delgado (128) and Wheatland's Timothy Hardee (134) each placed second.

Sutter's Sam Akin (122) and Live Oak's Ahsim Khan (128) both took third.

Sutter's Branden Gildemeister (108) and Robert Snow (172), Marysville's Chris Fannon (122) and Alex Perez (134), Wheatland's Flor Cano (108.1) and Jonathan Vargas (172.1), and Live Oak's Muhammad Mudass (115) each took fourth.
