Directed and emceed by Neil Thorson, "A New Year's Cabaret — Bah Humbug!" runs today through Monday in Marysville.
The fourth annual variety show is a fundraiser for Sutter Performing Arts Association, which is working to restore the Sutter Theater on Plumas Street in Yuba City for use as a community space for the arts.
"Bah Humbug" features nine local performers plus Thorson singing "timeless music from the Great American Songbook" accompanied by live music. Band members include Spencer Clark on saxophone; Russell Decker on bass and guitar; Rob Hilton on drums; John Proctor on trumpet; and musical director Steve Shepard on piano.
"It's a cabaret full of good, old-fashioned music — the older songs that just bring a smile to your face and you can't help but sing along," said producer Donna Clark.
Thorson said, "I believe that if you're entertaining somebody, you should sing what they want to hear rather than what you want to sing. So I always try to pick songs that are fun and that people will recognize.
"Life is a cabaret. Come and have fun at the cabaret. I think people will have a ball — and they will still get home and in bed no later than 10 o'clock!" he added.
The program includes "Moon River," "King of the Road," "It's Impossible," "Harper Valley PTA," "'Til There Was You," "Cabaret," "Dear Heart," "St. Louis Blues," "Broadway Baby" and "What Are We Doing New Year's Eve?" plus many more.
"There's only one song that we repeat from any of the past years, and that is, of course, 'Santa Baby' because people love it," Thorson said.
"We've got a wonderful cast that has performed with us before along with a couple of new additions. It will be a lot of fun with a couple of new people on board," Clark said.
The cast includes Stephanie Bollinger, Brant Bordsen and Eleanor Bordsen, Heather Chavez, Janet Frye, Rachael Fuentes, Joseph Moye, Nancy Pasternack and Yvette Velez.
"It's a really high-tech show this year, too, because we've got wonderful lighting and sound design that we haven't had before. We are really pleased to have Matthew Timoszyk on board to do that for us," Clark said.
"Come in out of the cold for an evening of songs to warm the heart and bring back some memories," she added.
