Atkins powers Yuba baseball past Laney
Horsfall sets school javelin record
Faith Christian High grad Daniel Atkins went 4 for 5 including a big three-run homer in the fifth inning to help lift the Yuba College baseball team to a 10-9 Bay Valley Conference victory over visiting Laney on Saturday.
Yuba City's Zak Morgan finished the day 3 for 5 and Chris Stocker went 3 for 6 to help the cause for the 49ers, who trailed 8-3 in the third inning. Taylor Hickman allowed one run over five innings of relief work to earn the win.
Colusa's Brandon Rader went 2 for 5 and Nick Finney was 2 for 4 in the win for Yuba (10-19, 6-14).

Horsfall sets school record
Matt Horsfall took first in the javelin at the Maurice Compton Invitational and set a new school record in the process. His throw of 197 feet, 1 inch is the new number atop the 49ers' record book.
John Garcia took fifth in the event with a 159-2.
Olumide Coker was third in the 100-meter run (10.94 seconds) and fifth in the 200 (22.32) at the 21-team tournament. Rafael Valdez was seventh in the hammer throw (130 feet, 6 inches) and the 49ers' 400 relay team of Coker, James Thurston, Trevor Kinsey and Carlos Gutierrez took eighth (43.69).
Meredith Salazar represented the Yuba women with a strong finish in the 1500 (5:51.97).
