Briefs: Play performances benefit Sandy victims

This weekend's performances of "Fiddler on the Roof" at The Acting Company in Yuba City are raising funds for the American Red Cross to aid the victims of Superstorm Sandy.

For every $10 donated, patrons will receive a coupon for a complimentary ticket to any Acting Company Main Stage opening weekend over the next 12 months.

The performances are at 8 p.m. today and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday at 815 B St. Tickets are $15 each.

Donations are also being accepted at The Acting Company's box office from noon-2 p.m. weekdays through Wednesday. Call 751-1100 for more information.

Table Talk topic is pioneer

Marysville pioneer Jose Manuel Ramirez Rosales is the topic of this month's Table Talks at 3 p.m. Nov. 17 at the Yuba County Library in Marysville.

Author Andy Jeremi will speak about Ramirez Rosales' upbringing in Chile, his art education in France, his arrival in California and the founding of Marysville before his return to Chile.

In addition, the talk will include a visit to the Ellis Ramirez Castle at 220 Fifth St., guided by building co-owner Manda Olmstead.

Gardeners host workshop

The UC Master Gardeners are hosting a workshop on propagation and grafting at the Marysville Community Garden across from the Yuba County Library, at the corner of Second and C streets, in Marysville.

The workshop, at 10 a.m. Nov. 17, is the group's last workshop of the year at the site.

Food distribution in the Yuba County foothills, coordinated by the Yuba-Sutter Gleaners Food Bank, is scheduled Thursday at three locations.

Rec committee seeks members

The recreation committee of Yuba Feather Community Services is seeking new members to serve and be a part of its regular meetings.

The committee is involved in organizing activities and making improvements at Ponderosa Park in the Yuba County foothills.

Meetings are held at 6 p.m. the first Sunday of every month at the Ponderosa Community Center, 17103 Ponderosa Way, Brownsville.

Sutter County

9,000 ballots remain to count

Sutter County has more than 8,000 vote-by-mail ballots still to process, along with 1,000 provisional ballots, according to county Clerk-Recorder Donna Johnston.

Ballot counting could start as soon as this week for those remaining forms, with a possible update on vote totals today. Johnston said it's possible some provisional ballots will be discarded, but overall, the vote total pushed the county's turnout to about 70 percent, she said.

Though elections officials haven't determined where the remaining ballots come from, they could be enough to tip the result in close races, such as Live Oak City Council.

Marysville

Saving energy workshop planned

How to build a house with energy bills in mind — and ways to renovate your house and lower them — will be the focus of a workshop Wednesday evening in Marysville.

Representatives from Pacific Gas & Electric Co. and the not-for-profit group Energy Upgrade California will make presentations at the workshop, as will a contractor working with Energy Upgrade California, which shares information on upgrades residents can make to improve energy efficiency.

The workshop, which is free, is 6:30 p.m.-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Allyn Scott Youth and Community Center, 1830 B St., Marysville.

Child education forum is Nov. 17

A symposium for early childhood education professionals is set Nov. 17 at Brandman University in Yuba City.

Topics include time management, making a classroom accessible and welcoming and the value of higher education.
