Briefs: Donate to coats 'blitz' on Friday

A coats "blitz" collection is under way today in Yuba City for the News10 Coats for Kids program distribution planned this month.

Donated coats of all sizes are being accepted from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. at Tri-Counties Bank, 1441 Colusa Highway, Yuba City. The project is co-sponsored locally by the Yuba-Sutter Salvation Army.

As of Thursday, only 100 coats had been collected in the Yuba-Sutter area. The program distributed more than 3,000 coats in 2011.

The donations will be distributed starting at 9 a.m. Dec. 28 at the former Mervyn's building, 202 D St., Marysville.

For more information, call Chaya Galacia, Salvation Army business administrator, at 216-4533.

Washington DC

Garamendi on committee

US Rep. John Garamendi has been appointed to committees for the armed services and transportation in the 113th Congress next year, in addition to the agriculture committee.

Garamendi, D-Walnut Grove, said in a press release those two committees and agriculture are critical for constituents in his district, which includes Yuba-Sutter as well as much of Yolo and Solano counties.

Armed services oversees the US Air Force, which has two bases in Garamendi's district, and transportation and infrastructure oversees federal highways like Interstate 5 and levees maintained by the US Army Corps of Engineers.

The new Congress convenes in January, and Garamendi said he is working with US House of Representatives leadership to serve on three committees, rather than the typical two.
