Briefs: Public invited to flag retirement

The American Legion Post 807 invites the public to watch the proper way to retire an old, worn or tattered American flag during its flag retirement ceremony at noon Sunday in Linda.

The ceremony, at 5477 Feather River Blvd., should take about 20 minutes.

The post is also serving its weekly breakfast from 8 a.m.-11 a.m. that day. For more information, call the post at 742-6989.

Live Oak

Kiwanis Club hosts crab feed

The second annual Fresh Crab Feed, hosted by the Live Oak Kiwanis Club, is set Jan. 19 at the Live Oak Community Center.

Tickets are $40 per person and can be purchased by Wednesday by calling Marie Teria at 635-2294 or Kathy Walker at 713-0214.

Tickets will also be available at the door.

The dinner starts at 6 p.m. with a choice of crab or tri-tip plus clam chowder and salad.

Yuba City

Deposits taken for Japan trip

Deposits are being accepted for the annual Yuba City Sister City Association trip to Toride, Japan, set June 13-20.

The event is open to adults and students. Participants will stay at host family homes in Japan.

A deposit of $450 is due by March 1. The cost of an airplane ticket is about $1,400 to $1,500 per person, said Jim Grant, association president.

Nielsen takes oath of office

Jim Nielsen was sworn in Thursday as the 4th State Senate District senator, after triumphing in Tuesday's special election runoff over Mickey Harrington.

In final balloting, Nielsen, R-Gerber, received 67 percent of the vote to 33 percent for Harrington, a Democrat and frequent candidate who lives in Magalia.

The district encompasses most of inland California between Sacramento and the Oregon border, including Yuba and Sutter counties.

Yuba City

Chili cook-off slated Feb. 16

Hot dogs, hamburgers and nachos will be part of the Chili Cook-off sponsored by the Yuba City Moose Lodge to benefit the 2013 Relay for Life in Yuba City.

The fundraiser is from 5 p.m.-9 p.m. Feb. 16 at the Moose Lodge, 205 S. Walton Ave. in Yuba City.

Tickets are $5 per person, with children 8 years and younger admitted free.
